Into Automating

Automation should reduce the work in your day, not add to it.

I help manufacturers get more out of the equipment they already own — without the six-month consulting engagement or the vendor lock-in.

About

Twenty years creating complex machines. Now helping others with theirs.

Jim

I'm Jim Johnson. I spent twenty years as a controls engineer for a custom manufacturing machine maker before going independent. Since then I've worked with several manufacturing sites that all had the same problem: automation that was bought to solve one issue and ended up creating three more.

I don't sell hardware and I don't have a preferred integrator kickback arrangement. My job is to tell you what's actually wrong with your line, what it costs to fix, and whether fixing it is even the right call — sometimes the right answer is a $400 sensor, not a $40,000 retrofit.

I work directly, one project at a time. No account managers, no subcontracted engineers you've never met.

What I do

Three ways I usually get called in.

PLC & SCADA programming

Allen-Bradley, Siemens, IDEC, and Omron platforms. New logic, migrations off obsolete hardware, and HMI screens your operators will actually use.

Robotics integration

Bringing a robot cell online, or getting an existing one to stop faulting out twice a shift. Fanuc, Yaskawa, and Denso.

Line & process optimization

Finding the real bottleneck — usually not the one maintenance has been chasing — and fixing throughput without a capital project.
